Cool?

Prospect Magazine had an interesting blurb by Brian Eno a few months ago titled The Death of Uncool. I’m always a little leery of any “Death of” articles, but it’s by Eno! I think that phrase has lost it’s ability to provoke, but quibbles aside, I think it has been pretty obvious for a while now that dominant stylistic trends have definitely become less, well, dominant. They are still there though… these paradigms are more like diffuse trends, than dominant narratives. Which has more to do with the generally fractured nature of culture at all levels than anything else. Within the various cultural niches there are still ideas about cool/uncool floating around but it is good to see a more fluid, layered and permeable culture at work.
